Tucker For President? Here’s What We Know

(Congress Report) – There’s a lot of speculation floating around the internet right now concerning potential reasons why the relationship between conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and Fox News came to an abrupt end on Monday, including the idea that he might be about to announce his candidacy for president. I don’t know about that, given his support for former President Donald Trump. But anything is possible at this point, especially since the whole situation still remains unexplained.

According to a report from the Daily Caller, another conservative commentator, Stephen L. Miller, who also serves as an editor for The Spectator, tweeted, “He’s running.” Other media figures on the right also shared a similar belief as Philip Wegmann, a White House correspondent for RealClear News noted, “It significantly changes the GOP 2024 primary overnight.”

“Keep an eye out for speeches in the Granite State,” posted fellow conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt, making a reference to New Hampshire. “He’s always downplayed the possibility of running for president, but that’s an open possibility now,” Christopher Rufo, a conservative writer and fellow of the Manhattan Institute, a leading think tank on the right, went on to write concerning the speculation about Carlson.

“Carlson, co-founder of the Daily Caller News Foundation, hosted the show ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ on Fox News’ primetime 8 p.m. slot from 2016 to 2023. During this time, he was consistently ranked as the highest-rated cable television host in the United States,” the Daily Caller said. “An estimated 3.2 million viewers watched Carlson’s show every night in March of 2023, per Mediaite, which political experts claim would make him a leading candidate for the Republican nomination.”

“He’s a talented communicator with a massive platform. I think if he runs he’d be formidable,” remarked Luke Thompson, who is a GOP political strategist who was part of the Jeb Bush campaign back in 2016, to Politico. This same sentiment was shared by Sam Nunberg, who was an adviser to Donald Trump, who predicted back in 2020 that if Biden were to win and Tucker decided to run, he would be the Republican Party nominee.

If it turns out Carlson does run that would, of course, pit him against former President Donald Trump and likely current GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who is expected to announce his intentions to run for the White House in May.

In the past, Carlson has been asked if he’d run for president and he denied having any such interest.

“I have zero political ambition in life. My ambition is to write my script and that’s what you’ll hear from anyone who knows me,” Carlson stated during an interview with Semafor’s Ben Smith in July 2022.

He then added, “I don’t want power and I’ve never wanted power, [but] I’m annoyed by things and want them to change.”

  1. Wow….at the very least a … “Trump / Carlson”… ticket for 2024. He could get his political legs under the best. Then…..that would be a given then for 2028 with a …”Carlson / Owens”… ticket. Think about it…! I’m just thinking out loud is all.

  2. Tucker’s stance on support for Ukraine makes him an untenable candidate. Love him, otherwise. On this issue he sounds like a Kremlin spokesperson. 59% of independent voters favor support for Ukraine. 69% percent of the general public believe the U.S. support for Ukraine is “just right” or “not enough” (39% + 30%). Russian aggression didn’t stop when they grabbed Ukraine’s Crimea Oblast seven years ago and no one with any sense of history will believe they would stop their aggression if they were awarded with four more Ukrainian oblasts now. The hostilities in Ukraine could end this year, as Russia may run out of military funding by September 2023. Should the hostilities continue into November 2024 and the GOP candidate be against supporting Ukraine while the Dems are in favor of supporting them, I think that may well be the deciding factor in the Dems favor.
